You must include your name with any nomination. Nominations will be accepted only from natural persons active in fandom, or from full or supporting members of Swancon 40, the 2015 Australian National SF Convention. Where a nominator may not be known to the Ditmar subcommittee, the nominator should provide the name of someone known to the subcommittee who can vouch for the nominator’s eligibility. Convention attendance or membership of an SF club are among the criteria which qualify a person as “active in fandom”, but are not the only qualifying criteria. If in doubt, nominate and mention your qualifying criteria. If you received this email directly, you almost certainly qualify.

You may nominate as many times in as many Award categories as you like, although you may only nominate a particular person, work or achievement once. The Ditmar subcommittee, which is organised under the auspices the Standing Committee of the Natcon Business Meeting, will rule on situations where eligibility is unclear. The Aurealis Awards recognise the achievements of Australian speculative fiction writers (science fiction, fantasy and horror), and will be presented by Conflux.

The ceremony will take place at University House in the grounds of the Australian National University, Canberra. The Great Hall is a beautiful space and will lend a new aura to the awards.

The awards will feature performances by The Fildenstar.

Until February 28, tickets cost just $30 and include the ceremony, a goodies bag and pre-ceremony drinks.

Spaces are limited, so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment!

What We’re After: Horror stories, tales that frighten, yarns that unsettle us in our comfortable homes. All themes in this genre will be accepted, from the well-used (zombies, vampires, ghosts etc) to the highly original, so long as the story is professional and well written. No previously published entries will be accepted – all tales must be an original work by the author. Stories can be as violent or as bloody as the storyline dictates, but those containing gratuitous sex or violence will not be considered.

There are two categories for submission:

FLASH FICTION
Stories up to 1000 words in length. The winning author will receive paid publication in Midnight Echo; The Magazine of the AHWA and an engraved plaque.

SHORT STORY
Stories with 1001 to 8000 words. The winning author will receive paid publication in Midnight Echo; The Magazine of the AHWA and an engraved plaque.

About the Awards:

The ACT Writers’ and Publishers’ Awards are an Australian literary award presented by the ACT Writers Centre for the best books in the categories of non-fiction, fiction, poetry and children’s literature written in the Canberra region.

We are incredibly pleased to announce that editors Liz Grzyb and Talie Helene have signed on to produce another three annual volumes of The Year’s Best Australian Fantasy and Horror.

These volumes shall see the series continue until at least 2016, comprising the very best antipodean stories from 2015.

The first of these new volumes, covering stories published in 2013, is now open for submissions.

The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2014.

Please note that while the editors do read widely, they are relying on writers to assist them by sending copies of their stories. This is the best way to ensure that stories do not get overlooked.

Expected Publication Date: June 2013. The book can be pre-ordered at indiebooksonline.com. The anthology will be available in hardcover, ebook and trade editions.

If your book is being published later in December, it needs to be entered in this year’s Awards, but this must be done by December 7. Physical (or electronic) copies of the work must be received by the judges by December 31, 2013, in order to be considered.
